Looking Forward: Glasgow Science Festival
Glasgow Science Festival kicks off tomorrow (1 - 11 June 2023), with the theme "Glasgow's Looking Forward". We've had a browse through the programme, and picked out some of our favourite events.
Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum
The Glasgow Science Festival team will be at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th June, with free activities linked to the collections and the festival theme. Amongst other things, you can help the Open University's School of Mathematics and Statistics build a four-metre-diameter self-supporting dome out of wooden slats, with no nails or glue! Using ideas by Leonardo da Vinci, use different tessellating patterns to create domes of different strengths, bringing together history, art, technology, architecture and geometry.
Riverside Museum
At Riverside Museum, you'll find dozens of free activities for all ages on offer daily from Thursday 1st to Sunday 11th June. With the themes of transport, innovation, engineering and technology, it's a perfect tie in to this year's Maths Week Scotland theme 'Maths in Motion'!
Glasgow Botanic Gardens
From Saturday 3rd to Thursday 8th June, drop by Kibble Palace at Glasgow Botanic Gardens for loads of free activities suitable for all ages. Of particular interest to us was the wind turbines workshop with students from the University of Glasgow - Why are most wind turbines designed with only 3 blades? Experiment and create miniature wind turbines. Test your turbines by adding blades and changing angles to see which designs convert the most wind energy into usable kinetic energy. Activities change daily, so check before you go.
Maths Inside
While you're at Kibble Palace, check out the free Maths Inside exhibition on display from Saturday 3rd to Thursday 8th June, which celebrates maths with a selection of winning entries from the Scottish-wide photo competition, *maths inside*. Visit the exhibition to experience mathematics through the lenses of the 2022 winners - and get inspired for this year's competition which opens in September!
STEM Book Displays
Librarians across the Glasgow are picking their favourite STEM (science, technology, engineering & maths) themed books for you to check out and enjoy! So head to your local library between Thursday 1st and Sunday 11th June to browse what's on offer.
To view the full programme, head over to the Glasgow Festival website. Some events require pre-booking.
